ESD-dissipative flooring certified to IEC 61340-5-1 for a hospital MRI and CT imaging suite.
A private hospital in Ridge commissioned a new diagnostic imaging wing housing an MRI scanner, two CT scanners, and supporting clinical spaces. The MRI manufacturer required flooring compliant with IEC 61340-5-1 dissipative specification (10⁶-10⁹ Ω) to prevent static discharge interfering with imaging reconstruction. Additional requirements: no magnetic components near the MRI, non-porous surface for infection control, and a subtle visual that did not clash with the clinical aesthetic.
We specified a dissipative welded sheet vinyl system with integrated conductive layer. The subfloor received a copper grid bonded to building earth, with bonding points verified by the MRI commissioning engineer before resin installation. The sheet vinyl was heat-welded at all seams for infection-control compliance. Installation happened in two phases — non-MRI rooms first while the MRI bay received its shielding installation — then the MRI bay floor completed just before the scanner arrival.
Specification meeting with hospital biomedical team and MRI commissioning engineer. Materials approval.
Subfloor preparation. Copper grid installation and earth-bonding. Independent verification.
Non-MRI rooms flooring installation. Heat-welded seams. Initial ESD testing.
MRI bay flooring installation following magnetic shielding completion. ESD verification at 32 test points.
Final commissioning with imaging scanners in place. IEC 61340-5-1 certificate issued.
The imaging suite has operated continuously for over two years with no ESD-related imaging artefacts. Annual re-testing has confirmed resistance values remain within specification. The hospital has since commissioned Floors GH for operating theatre flooring in two additional wings.
ESD flooring for imaging is a niche specification that very few Ghana contractors understand correctly. Floors GH presented us with reference installations, material compatibility certificates, and a commissioning plan that our equipment manufacturer's engineer approved without modification. The installation passed certification on first test. That level of specification discipline is why we now specify Floors GH across our estate.
